Home Sweet Home
Conceived, built, and installed in partnership with artist Erin Stinson (Studio Stinson), this 16’x12’x5’ sculpture was created as a temporary public art installation to be displayed as part of igNIGHT Art Illuminated2017.
We used Canada’s official animal the beaver to celebrate the theme of Canada 150 and included a soundscape of forest animals. To us, the beaver best represents Canadian culture, our vast natural landscape, and our people. Beavers are industrious creatures that believe in community: mating for life; staying with the same group of beavers for years; keeping their young with them for the first several years of their life; and, providing shelter for many different creatures during the winter season. This community of sharing echoes some of the values that represent Canada, our Home Sweet Home.
Seven interpretive light boxes surrounded the platform and displayed fun facts about beavers with illustrations I created for each. The opening night celebration saw over 500 visitors and the Mi Dance group performed the Beaver Dance, created for the unveiling.
